A colour photograph (Figure 77), taken in the Leith factory of William Christie shortly before its closure in 1962, shows a simple cylindrical structure built straight onto a level ground surface. The structure has four encircling iron bands below a shallow arched crown. Through the open wicket two stacks of rectangular cast iron saggars can be seen. The bricks for sealing the wicket are piled to the right. Either side of the wicket is a firebox built against the outer wall of the kiln with an iron door in the outer face and loose fireclay bats over the top. The Leith factory was established in 1900 (Gallagher & Sharp 1986, 13).
