The following remarks reflect on the Poznań team's experiences when fulfilling one of the deliverables of the Polish contribution to the ARENA Project. One of the main aims of ARENA was "the promotion of elements of the heritage concerned including important archaeological texts (books, papers, catalogues) made available in digital format". To develop an appropriate model for such a presentation, an experiment has been carried out at Poznań Archaeological Museum. It has been based upon the documentation of the vast excavations of two important and spectacular sites in the province of Wielkopolska (or: Greater Poland):
Biskupin near Żnin (80 km NE of Poznań) - a waterlogged Late Bronze Age / Early Iron Age site in Mid-Western Poland. A long-term excavation that started in 1934, it revealed perfectly preserved wooden constructions of a fortified settlement on an island in the Biskupińskie Lake (Piotrowska 1997-1998).
Kowalewko near Oborniki (30 km N of Poznań) - the Roman Age cemetery in Kowalewko with almost 500 graves, extraordinarily rich in both funeral customs and burial finds. It was discovered and excavated during the major archaeological rescue project that started in 1994, prior to the construction of the Trans - European gas pipeline from the Jamal peninsula (Siberia) to Western Europe.
