2. Getting beyond identity politics: why a European Information Infrastructure is important for archaeology

This section sets out the problems faced by European projects that focus too heavily on the legitimisation of contemporary Europe through the past. These problems are illustrated by attempts to present European 'origin myths' from a number of historic periods. Such issues are problematic and raise serious concerns. Ultimately, however, there are many positive aspects to European co-operation that take projects beyond problems of identity politics.
