The parish of Rocklands includes the villages Rockland St Peter and Rockland All Saints, both mentioned in Domesday. The northern part of the parish is part of the central Norfolk plateau land and is mostly used for arable. At Rockland Mere there is both wetland and oak woodland. The southern part of the plateau is intersected by small tributary valleys of the River Thet.
The parish is the site of a large Early Saxon cemetery and Middle Saxon settlement, situated on the site of a Roman settlement, as well as a second Early Saxon cemetery.
Most of the metal-detected finds are centred on these two sites. The VASLE dataset is derived from the Norfolk HER and the EMC. The site of the larger cemetery and settlement has revealed beads, brooches, buckles, pendants and other personal items from the Early Saxon period, as well as coins, pottery sherds, spindle whorls and harness fittings from the Middle and Late periods. The site of the other cemetery has been largely destroyed, but similar Early Saxon personal items have been recovered from this site, as well as cremation urns and human remains.
