The VASLE dataset for the Bedford 'productive site' is derived from the EMC only. A series of excavations examined the Anglo-Saxon origins of the modern town, including the Late Saxon boundary ditch. St Peter's Church is of Anglo-Saxon origin and Offa of Mercia was buried in Bedford in AD 796. In the late 9th century Bedford was on the boundary separating Wessex and the Danelaw. Coins were minted here from the reign of Eadwig until 1066. It is likely that multi-settlement foci were emerging in the Bedford area in the Middle Saxon period, which developed into the urban centre later (Palmer 2003, 56).
