5. Instructions for Converting Additional Templates from Illustrator
The following instructions describe a relatively simple method for converting Illustrator files (such as those published by M. Coutureau/INRAP) into shapefiles. Details may differ on versions of Illustrator other than CS4 v.14. Please note that the conversion process does not always work perfectly, and some elements may occasionally have to be redrawn.
Open the Illustrator file and turn off all layers apart from the one containing the elements themselves.
Select all objects (ctrl+a).
From the object menu, choose 'path' then 'add anchor points'. Repeat this several times, until the lines between each anchor point are effectively straight.
Go to the object menu again and choose 'path' then 'simplify'. Check the box marked 'straight lines' and click OK.
Keeping all elements selected, choose 'export' from the file menu. The default file type should be AutoCAD drawing (.dwg). Keep this and enter a name, then click OK.
When a dialogue box appears, check 'export selected art only', then click OK.
Open ArcCatalogue, locate your .dwg file and expand it.
Right-click the polygon component and choose 'export' then 'to shapefile (single)'.
Type the desired name and location for your shapefile in the ensuing dialogue box.
Repeat this process for the other layers in the Illustrator file, only using the polyline rather than polygon component in the AutoCAD file for the details and outline.
Find your elements shapefile and double-click to bring up its properties. Select the fields tab.
Add fields for whatever element/portion information you intend to use.
Open ArcMap and select 'a new empty map'.
Add the shapefiles using 'add data' in the file menu, then save the project.
If you want to divide elements into portions, use the trace tool on the editor toolbar to create new features following the lines of the existing elements.
Enter element names and codes into the element layer's attribute table.
