Figure 28: The temple of Portunus (AFSRCM)
Originally identified as the Temple of Fortuna Virilis (Figure 28), since 1924 the temple had been under renovation by Muñoz, who was then the head of the Soprintendenza ai Monumenti of the city of Rome. The work was concluded in 1925 after prolonged negotiations with the Armenian Congregation (Muñoz 1925; Bellanca 2003, 79-97), to whom the church of S. Maria Egiziaca belonged (which had existed inside the temple since the 9th century; Armellini and Cecchelli 1942, 751-4).

In 1930, the Armenian hospice near the Temple of Portunus was demolished (Figure 29). It was described as 'il grande capannone che sbarrava il Velabro verso i Cerchi ed un fabbricato che allo sbocco di via dei Cerchi separava l'ambiente di Bocca della Verità' (a great pavilion which blocked the Velabrum towards Via dei Cerchi and separated it from the Piazza Bocca della Verità) (Bianchi 1930, 582, figs at 575; Gatti 1933, 278).
