A single example of Aesculapius (1124), the god of medicine and healing, has been found in Britain on a site near Chichester, W. Sussex. He is draped from the left shoulder across the waist, leaving his well-muscled torso uncovered. At his left side he holds a snake-entwined staff. Jackson (1995, 19-21) notes that the figure is well made and worn, probably from handling over many years, and suggests that the similarities between this figure and one from Virunum, Austria (Fleischer 1967, 51-2, Taf. 28 no. 39), could indicate that both were made at the same workshop.
