2. Aims and objectives

The present project was instigated to:

  1. Evaluate the potential for the recovery of archaeological detail using low-level high-resolution multi-spectral scanning and to compare and contrast the returns from this technology with oblique, monochrome and colour photography and high-resolution colour vertical photography.
  2. To analyse the multi-spectral data and establish the most productive bands for archaeological feature recognition and extract new data that could be added to the Sites and Monuments Record.
  3. To enhance information on a sample of identified sites, through the application of geophysical surveys and limited field walking on the Yorkshire Wolds and in the Vale of Pickering.
  4. To evaluate the potential for recovery of additional information by the use of targeted fluxgate gradiometer and resistance surveying, where neither conventional aerial photography nor MSS scanning has identified archaeological features.
  5. To evaluate the potential for the integration of this multi-sensor data set and the interpretive results within a geographic data management system, thereby enhancing the Sites and Monuments record for the project area.
