In order to study regional variations in the distribution of portable antiquities the following section breaks down England and Wales into seven regions:
Each sub-section follows a common format, considering topography and settlement, the quantification of finds, the distribution of finds, and possible constraints on data recovery. A conclusion attempts to assess how far the distribution of finds reflects real differences in settlement and artefact usage within the region.
