2. Phases of Reconstruction in Historic Houses

This study has used a sample of 112 buildings, those built in England between 1400 and 1600 that are currently open to the public. Looking at the reconstruction work undertaken on these buildings, broad patterns can be identified of types of work which were more common in different periods over the last 130 years. The approaches taken have affected the buildings. By comparing many different buildings across England, this study contextualises the work at different times. The patterns of phases of reconstruction and types of organisations involved in such work are shown in Figure 5. The number of phases of reconstruction and their dates and types are shown in this diagram, which demonstrates the extent to which some buildings have undergone repeated reconstructions, two buildings having seen five different phases of alteration since they first opened to the public in the late 19th century.
