The sites discussed in the text are enumerated in the following tables, together with basic data on combs identified. The data presented do not constitute a comprehensive record of comb occurrence in a given region, and for more thorough consideration of the northern British material, readers are referred to Ashby 2006.
Numbers in parentheses denote cases in which a type constitutes a numerically insignificant proportion of the assemblage (and thus may represent an import), while those in italics relate to combs whose presence may only be inferred on the basis of fragmentary material. Neither of these categories of evidence is used in the production of the accompanying maps.
Publication details for each site are also given, indicating where further information may be found. This may relate either to the sites in general, or, more specifically, to the detail of any published comb collections.
